Improving bayesian posterior correlation analysis on type Ia supernova luminosity evolution

چکیده

ABSTRACT Much of the cosmological utility thus far extracted from Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) relies on assumption that SN peak luminosities do not evolve significantly with age (local or global) their stellar environments. Two recent studies have provided conflicting results in evaluating validity this assumption, one finding no correlation between Hubble residuals (HR) and environment age, while other claims a significant correlation. In Letter we perform an independent reanalysis rectifies issues statistical methods employed by both aforementioned studies. Our analysis follows principled approach properly accounts for regression dilution critically (and unlike prior studies) utilizes Bayesian-model-produced estimates (posterior samples) instead point estimates. Moreover, posterior is used as informative regression. We find Pearson HR local (global) to be excess 4σ (3σ). Assuming there exists linear relationship corresponding slope −0.035 ± 0.007 mag Gyr−1 (−0.036 Gyr−1). encourage further use our examine host correlations, well experiments correcting luminosity evolution standardization.

The Type Ia Supernova Width-luminosity Relation

Observations of type Ia supernovæ at high redshifts have become an important tool for studying the geometry of the universe. The relation between the duration of the peak phase of a type Ia supernova’s lightcurve and its luminosity (broader is brighter) forms the cornerstone of this measurement, yet it is a purely empirical relation. In this paper we show that the relation is a natural conseque...

Analysis of the Type Ia Supernova Sn1994d

On Mar. 7, 1994, Treffers, Filippenko and Van Dyk (1994) discovered the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 1994D in the SO galaxy NGC 4526, a member of the Virgo cluster which was was about 12 days before maximum light. Subsequently, both the light curve in Johnson’s UBVRI colors and spectra a have been monitored by several groups (e.g. Filippenko et al. private communication, Smith et al., 1995) making...

The Type Ia Supernova

We present the rst measurement of the rate of Type Ia super-novae at high redshift. The result is derived using a large subset of data from the Supernova Cosmology Project as described in more detail at this meeting by Perlmutter et al. (1996). We present our methods for estimating the numbers of galaxies and the number of solar luminosities to which the survey is sensitive, the supernova detec...

On the Origin of the Type Ia Supernova Width-luminosity Relation

Brighter Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have broader, more slowly declining B-band light curves than dimmer SNe Ia. We study the physical origin of this width-luminosity relation (WLR) using detailed radiative transfer calculations of Chandrasekhar mass SN Ia models. We find that the luminosity dependence of the diffusion time (emphasized in previous studies) is in fact of secondary relevance in u...

The Type Ia Supernova Rate

We explore the idea that the Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) rate is made up of two components: a prompt piece that is proportional to the star formation rate (SFR) and an extended piece that is proportional to the total stellar mass. We fit the parameters of this model to the local observations of Mannucci and collaborators and then study its impact on three important problems. On cosmic scales, t...
